RockStop® Rockshield Enhances Pipeline Protection in the Regional Energy Access Project
Williams 30 in./ 42 in. (762 mm / 1067 mm) Regional Energy Access (REA)
The Regional Energy Access (REA) Project significantly increased natural gas capacity along Transco’s existing transmission system, delivering an additional 829,400 million ft³/d of natural gas from the Marcellus Shale to customers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. This expansion strengthens energy reliability in the region by optimizing infrastructure and enhancing distribution efficiency.
The project involved constructing two new pipeline loops running parallel to the existing Transco System in Pennsylvania. These included:
- 22.3 miles (35.9 km) of 30 in. (762 mm) OD pipeline (Regional Energy Lateral)
- 13.8 miles (22 km) of 42 in. (1067 mm) OD pipeline (Effort Loop)
Given the challenging terrain, RockStop® rockshield was chosen to safeguard 18 miles (29 km) of the 30 in. OD line from damage caused by rocky backfill.
Why RockStop® Rockshield Was the Ideal Choice
The contractor selected RockStop® rockshield due to its fast installation, superior mechanical protection, and cost-saving benefits. Unlike traditional rockshield materials that require extensive handling and time-consuming application, RockStop® was installed in a fraction of the time, helping keep the project on schedule.
One of the key factors in this efficiency was PipeSak Inc.’s low-temp heat tool, which allowed the contractor to securely heat-seal RockStop® for enhanced durability. This process provided a seamless protective barrier around the pipeline, ensuring long-term integrity in rugged conditions.
Beyond its ease of installation, RockStop® rockshield delivered significant cost savings. By reducing labor time and simplifying the installation process, the contractor minimized expenses while ensuring that the pipeline was well-protected from potential damage caused by sharp rocks and debris.

Project Impact and Future Applications
With 18 miles of RockStop® rockshield successfully installed, the Regional Energy Access Project benefited from an efficient and cost-effective solution for pipeline protection. As major pipeline projects continue to face challenges related to rocky terrain and aggressive backfill, RockStop® rockshield is proving to be a reliable alternative to traditional rockshield materials, helping contractors reduce costs, improve safety, and enhance long-term pipeline performance.
