Pipeline Protection Solutions for the Coastal GasLink Project
TC Energy 48 in. (1219 mm) Coastal GasLink (CGL)
The Coastal GasLink (CGL) pipeline project is one of the most ambitious energy infrastructure developments in Canadian history. Spanning approximately 416 miles (670 km), this 48 in. (1219 mm) OD pipeline was designed to transport 2.1 billion ft³/d of natural gas across northern British Columbia to the LNG Canada facility in Kitimat, where it is processed for export to global markets.
The CGL pipeline route presented extreme construction challenges, traversing rugged terrain, densely forested areas, and the Rocky Mountains themselves. With steep slopes, rocky backfill, and remote locations, ensuring pipeline protection and stability was a top priority. To meet these demands, the project team relied on RockStop® rockshield, PipeDefender® engineered pipeline lagging, and PipePillo® structured pipeline supports, providing 360° protection throughout the pipeline’s journey.
RockStop® Rockshield: The Ultimate Mechanical Protection
With extensive sections of the CGL pipeline laid through rocky terrain and abrasive backfill, RockStop® rockshield was chosen to prevent coating damage and extend the pipeline’s service life. Unlike traditional rockshield materials, RockStop® provided a secure fit to the pipe, especially when installed using QuikStrip™ fasteners. These fasteners ensured that the rockshield stayed in place even during handling, lifting, and pipe lowering.
A key advantage of RockStop® rockshield in this project was its durability and flexibility. The contractor could safely move protected pipe using slings, rolling cradles, and even cranes, with no risk of shifting or damage to the pipeline coating. This feature was critical in a large-scale project where multiple handling and positioning steps were required before final installation.

Comprehensive Pipeline Protection with PipeDefender® and PipePillo®
Beyond mechanical protection, the CGL project required solutions to protect the pipeline from external impacts and ensure long-term stability. PipeDefender® engineered pipeline lagging was used alongside RockStop® to provide added reinforcement in high-impact areas, shielding the pipe from potential damage during handling and trenching.

To address pipeline support challenges in uneven and steep terrain, PipePillo® structured pipeline supports were implemented. These supports prevented sagging and stress on the pipeline, ensuring proper elevation and alignment in areas where traditional sandbags or foam pillows would be impractical. Their lightweight design and quick installation were key factors in maintaining project efficiency.

Project Success and Industry Impact
Over the three-year construction period, the use of RockStop® rockshield, PipeDefender® pipeline lagging, and PipePillo® supports contributed to enhanced pipeline integrity, cost savings, and improved installation efficiency. The CGL project demonstrated how a combination of high-performance pipeline protection solutions can address extreme terrain challenges while ensuring safe and efficient pipeline operation.
As global demand for natural gas infrastructure continues to rise, the successful implementation of PipeSak Inc.’s pipeline protection products in the Coastal GasLink project reinforces their value for future large-scale pipeline developments.
