Enhancing Pipeline Protection with RockStop® in Enbridge‘s ETNG System Alignment Program
Enbridge East Tennessee 24 in. (610 mm) Natural Gas System Alignment (ETNG SA)
The Enbridge ETNG System Alignment Program aims to improve the reliability and affordability of natural gas for regional utilities and power generators. This large-scale infrastructure project increases pipeline capacity by installing 16.5 miles of new 24 in. (610 mm) pipeline in Tennessee and 6.5 miles of 24 in. (610 mm) pipeline in Virginia, running parallel to an existing 16 in. (406 mm) pipeline. Additionally, two new compressor stations are being constructed across three states to support the expanded system. The project, which began in late 2024, is designed to strengthen the region’s natural gas supply while ensuring long-term pipeline integrity.
RockStop® rockshield was selected for the ETNG System Alignment Program due to its ability to enhance efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness. Its lightweight and flexible design allowed for fast installation, reducing labor time and minimizing delays. Unlike traditional rock shield materials that require extensive handling, RockStop® streamlined the process, keeping the project on schedule while lowering labor costs. Additionally, its worker-friendly application improved safety by reducing heavy lifting.

Beyond installation benefits, RockStop® provided superior mechanical protection, shielding the pipeline from abrasive backfill and preventing coating damage that could lead to costly repairs. Its adaptability across varied soil and backfill conditions made it an ideal choice for a multi-state project like ETNG. With substantial savings in material and labor costs, RockStop® proved to be a cost-effective solution that ensures long-term pipeline integrity while optimizing construction efficiency.
Looking Ahead
As the ETNG System Alignment Program progresses, the continued use of RockStop® Rockshield is expected to further enhance efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness. With its proven ability to shield pipelines from abrasive backfill and prevent coating damage, RockStop® continues to be a valuable asset in large-scale pipeline projects like this one.
