FAQ
-
What is a pipe stand, and why is it used?
A pipe stand is a support structure that elevates and stabilizes pipelines during construction, maintenance, and operation. It prevents sagging, deformation, and ground contact.
-
What types of pipe stands are used in the oil and gas industry?
Common types of pipeline supports include:
• Engineered plastic supports – Lightweight, durable, and resistant to corrosion.
• Wooden cribbing – Traditional but susceptible to moisture damage.
• Adjustable steel stands – Used for custom height adjustments in uneven terrain. -
How do pipe stands help prevent pipeline ovality?
Pipe stands evenly distribute weight and support the pipeline, preventing sagging that can cause pipeline ovality. By maintaining a stable, round shape, they help ensure the structural integrity of the pipeline.
PipePillo® provides 90 degrees of permanent support to prevent pipeline ovality and provide stability. Their design ensures that the pipeline remains in its intended shape, reducing the risk of deformation and the need for expensive repairs. In third-party testing, PipePillos® provided better ovality protection at their standard spacing than any level of compacted sand bedding. The flexibility of PipePillo® supports allows them to absorb stress without compromising the pipeline’s integrity.
-
How long will a PipePillo® pipeline support last?
PipePillo® pipeline supports are completely inert and will outlast the life of the pipeline.
-
What can I use PipePillo® pipeline supports for?
PipePillo® pipeline supports are highly versatile and suitable for various applications. They are primarily used as permanent in-trench pipeline supports, offering a reliable alternative to traditional methods such as sandbags, foam supports, and dirt padding. As they are stackable, PipePillos® are also highly effective for:
• Stringing and welding
• Supporting pipes during integrity digs
• Inspection and fabrication
• Pipe storageThis versatility makes PipePillo® an invaluable tool in any pipeline contractor’s arsenal.
-
A PipePillo® costs more than a sandbag, how can it save money?
PipePillo® pipeline supports provides both direct and indirect savings when compared to sandbags.
Directly, a pipeline will require far less PipePillo® pipeline supports than sandbags as only one PipePillo® pipeline support is required at each support location, compared to the multiple sandbags required at each support location. Additionally, due to the extreme load-carrying capacity, PipePillos® can be spaced at much further distances from each other than a typical sandbag or foam configuration.
Indirectly, PipePillo® pipeline supports are significantly easier to install than standard pipeline support configurations, resulting in a much lower labor expense.
Having been proven to prevent pipeline ovality, PipePillo™ pipeline supports also reduce the overall risk of expensive repairs.
-
Can PipePillo® pipeline supports be placed in soft soil? Will the pipeline sink?
In most situations, no. PipePillos base offers a generous bearing support area.
Rarely, in extremely soft soil conditions, a PipePillo® pipeline support may sink slightly. This can be completely alleviated by increasing the surface area of the PipePillo® bottom by simply attaching each PipePillo® to a plywood base.
-
Can pipe stands be used on uneven terrain?
Yes, adjustable and flexible pipe stands are designed to provide stability on slopes and rough terrain. They help prevent pipeline stress caused by shifting ground conditions.
One of the standout features of PipePillo® pipeline supports is their design, which specifically accommodates uneven and rocky trench bottoms. The supports are engineered to remain stable, providing consistent and reliable support even in the most challenging trench conditions. This stability ensures that your pipeline maintains its integrity and alignment, regardless of the terrain.
-
Is there too much stress where the pipe leaves the edge of the PipePillo® pipeline support?
No. PipePillos® are designed to flex far before the pipe experiences any stress issues. In fact, PipePillo® pipeline supports have been proven to prevent ovality and some other stress-related issues.
-
How much does a PipePillo® pipeline support weigh?
Weights vary depending on the size of PipePillo® pipeline support being ordered. The smallest size weights just 0.4kg (0.8lbs), and the largest size weighs 19.4kg (42.8lbs). For full details of weight and capacity of all available sizes, please contact a PipeSak® sales representative.
-
What are PipePillo® pipeline supports made of?
PipePillo® pipeline supports are manufactured from high-strength polypropylene resins, with glass fiber reinforcement. The unique composition is environmentally inert, and softer than pipeline coatings.
-
Will PipePillo® pipeline supports damage the pipeline coating?
No. PipePillo® pipeline supports are designed to ensure that they will not have any effect on the pipeline coating.
-
What sizes of pipeline will PipePillo® pipeline supports accommodate?
PipePillo® pipeline weights are available in sizes accommodating pipelines with outer diameters anywhere from 4” up to 48” and everything in between.
-
Will PipePillo® support float?
No, PipePillo® pipeline supports will not float. They are specifically designed to stay in place and provide stable support for pipelines, even in environments where water is present. Their structure ensures that they remain anchored, preventing any unwanted movement or flotation.
-
How many PipePillo® pipeline supports do I need?
Due to their extreme load-carrying capacity, PipePillos® can be spaced further apart than standard sandbag or foam configurations, reducing the number of supports needed. Indirectly, PipePillo® supports are significantly easier to install, leading to lower labor expenses and faster project completion times. Contact us for a spacing estimate.
-
Can PipePillos® be used out of trench for stringing?
Yes, PipePillos® can be used for stringing. PipePillos® have stacking shoulders which add 6-8” of height per PipePillo®. They also have a low stacking height which can further adjust the height requirements by 3”. PipePillos® are significantly lighter than skids and can create skid towers in a fraction of the time as skids. They can also be used for low-level beveling applications. For installation into the ditch, the top PipePillo® can be tied to the pipe and simply lowered into the trench with proper support already there.
-
How do I use PipePillos®?
PipePillo® supports are lightweight and designed for quick installation, requiring less labor and time compared to the manual effort needed to position and secure multiple sandbags. PipePillos® can be tossed into the trench and straightened, slid down a 2×4, tied to the pipe, or even installed with a hydraulic excavator accessory- a PilloPicker. This ease of installation not only saves time but also reduces overall project costs, as fewer resources are needed for setup and adjustments.
