The Urucu-Coari- Manaus Pipeline was part of the Gasene Project, a 862 mile pipeline designed by
Petrobras in partnership with Sinopec to connect the existing Braziian southeast and northeast pipeline
networks. The Urucu-Coari Manaus section was a 410 mile pipeline that traversed the Amazon jungle, a
particularly difficult terrain and environmentally sensitive area. An above average rain index combined
with the low drainage soil of the Amazon and poor access to the ROW from main rivers ruled out the
transport of heavy concrete coated pipe. PipeSak® geotextile pipeline weights were transported empty
and filled onsite, providing a cost effective, environmentally neutral and easily portable buoyancy
control solution to one of the most challenging and environmentally sensitive areas in the world.
