PipeDefender® engineered pipeline lagging
A 715 mile-long (1150km) pipeline snaking through the Canadian Rocky Mountains has encountered rugged terrain, prompting the adoption of PipeDefender® engineered pipeline lagging to navigate the challenging conditions. One notable instance of its effectiveness occurred over Spread 5B, a segment of the 36-inch (814mm) OD pipeline near Vancouver.
In this specific area, the pipeline required both buoyancy control and mechanical protection against the large rocks dotting the landscape and the rip rap used to stabilize the steep slopes. Initially, the contractor opted for a geotextile wrapping solution, intending to fill it with concrete for buoyancy control and mechanical protection. However, supply issues arose, necessitating an alternative approach to address rock impact and denting concerns.
PipeDefender® Installed on Sloped Section of Pipe on the 36” TransMountain Expansion Project
With PipeDefender® engineered pipeline lagging, the contractor received all necessary products, avoiding delays and eliminating the need for modifications to bedding specifications in the challenging terrain. The flexibility of this product accommodated multiple 30˚ bends with ease, facilitating quick and seamless installation that made up for lost time.
The adaptation of PipeDefender® not only showcased innovations in logistics and installation but also underscored its ability to enhance performance in demanding environments, proving invaluable on this expansive Canadian project amidst the formidable Rocky Mountain landscape.
