Equitrans Midstream Hammerhead Pipeline

  • West Virginia, USA / 2019
  • Equitrans Midstream / Michels

Construction of the Hammerhead pipeline, owned by Equitrans Midstream (formerly EQT), began in March 2019 with the goal of providing 1.6 billion cubic feet of capacity for optimizing the Pennsylvania gathering and transmission systems. Spanning 64 miles, the Hammerhead pipeline runs from southwestern Pennsylvania into West Virginia.

Backfilling operations must be considerate of the material they are using as backfill. Especially in mountainous areas, such as with Hammerhead, backfill material may contain rocks or other protrusions which could harm the pipeline. In these cases, additional protection is used to ensure the pipeline coating remains intact.

PipeJacket by PipeSak® is a flexible, random-stranded wrap which protects the pipeline from both impact and abrasions. While providing superior impact and abrasion resistance, PipeJacket by PipeSak® does not impede the flow of cathodic protection, making it a leading choice for protecting pipelines during backfill operations.

PipeSak® was proud to supply over 5,000 pads of PipeJacket by PipeSak® rockshield which protected the pipeline throughout the construction and backfilling phases, ultimately leading to the completion of the pipeline in late 2019.
